10 Bucket List Things to Do in the Southern Hemisphere

The Southern Hemisphere is half of the Earth south of the Equator. Oceana, one-third of Africa, South America, and Antarctica are in the Southern Hemisphere. Below are 10 bucket list things to do in the Southern Hemisphere!

Antarctica

#1-Swim with Orcas in Antarctica-

Witness incredible ice formations and a thousand shades of blue and white in Antarctica!! The best way to go to Antarctica is on a boat trip or cruise. The trips run through the warmer months, from October to March. You will see penguins, whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more. You can even go cold water diving to swim with Orcas! Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family. Why are Orcas also known as Killer Whales? Killer whales got their name because they hunt and prey on larger whale species. The Orcas are as smart as dolphins and can work together socially.

Australia

#2: Hang out with Koalas, Kangaroos, and Wallabies at Kangaroo Island in Australia-

Australia is known for having incredible wildlife, including wallabies, koalas, and kangaroos. At Kangaroo Island, these wild animals roam freely in their natural habitat. If you want a closer look, visit Paul’s Place Wildlife Sanctuary set on Stokes Bay. Another great spot to see Kangaroos and white sand turquoise beaches is at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park.

#3: Walk Through the Lava Tunnels at Undara Volcanic National Park in North Queensland, Australia

You can walk through LAVA at the Undara Lava Tubes. The tubes were formed when molten lava cooled on the outside and turned into a crust.

South Africa

#4: Hike Table Mountain in South Africa at Sunset-

Table Mountain overlooks Cape Town and offers incredible sunset views on the water. The best part about going to Table Mountain is that you don’t have to hike because you can take a CABLE CAR up to the top and get the same beautiful view!

#5: Visit Namibia’s dramatic Skeleton Coast-

The coast of Namibia is a beautiful desert with sand dunes along the water. There also are skeletons of old rustic ships. Shipwrecks occur because rocks and currents are present at sea. Even though there is not much rain in Namibia, you will find wildlife, including desert lions, hyenas, giraffes, oryx, and elephants.

#6: Swim with MILLIONS of Sardines in Kwazulu Natal South Africa

Millions of Sardines migrate to South Africa’s Cape Point every year. You can scuba dive or snorkel among them between May to July! 

South America

#7: Stroll along Historic Colorful Homes at Valparaiso in Chile-

Valparaiso is the second largest city in Chile. The coastal city is known for having an enjoyable Funicular Ride up the mountain, where you can get a great view of the colorful houses, steep hills, and coastline.

#8: Admire Flowers in the Atacama Desert in Chile-

When the rain comes in the Atacama Desert, which is not often, you will find thousands of purple, pink, and orange flowers you can admire. The best time to see the flowers is from September to November.

#9: Cross the World’s Biggest Salt Flats in Bolivia

Did you know the salt flats in Bolivia are 3,475 square miles? WOW! Now that is CRAZY and you get to witness it. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October. Surrounding the salt flats are mountains, volcanoes, and lakes. 

New Zealand

10: Witness the Beautiful Views at Cape Reinga in New Zealand

Cape Reinga is at the north end of New Zealand, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. The view is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous from the lighthouse overlooking the water on a mountain.
