Top 10 Tips to Make Your Long-Haul Flight Easier

Long-haul flights can seem daunting for several reasons. Here are the top ten tips to make your journey easier.

My Story:

As you may know, I absolutely love to travel, and it is one of my favorite hobbies. So far, I have traveled to 35 countries! I am so proud of that. My beloved best friend also loves to travel, and one of her dreams was to live abroad. That dream finally came true, and she is now living in New Zealand! I am planning to visit her, and we have officially scheduled a trip to both Australia and New Zealand in December. I am beyond excited; however, as I get older, I am more terrified of heights and flying than ever before. Trust me, I used to have skydiving on my bucket list. Knowing that the flight from New York to Oceania is one of the longest flights out there really scares me. So, these ten tips are to help me get through it, but if you’re also afraid of flying, I hope they help you too.

Reasons A Long-Haul Flight Seems Daunting:

Remember that flying is one of the safest modes of transportation. Airlines and pilots prioritize safety, and the chances of an accident are extremely low. Focusing on the excitement of your destination can help shift your mindset. However, here are reasons that it does seem daunting:

-Turbulence
-Fatigue from sitting for long periods
-Jet lag disrupting sleep and routine
-Limited space and comfort
-Fear of flying or anxiety about crashing
-Concerns about delays and cancellations
-Cramped conditions and lack of privacy
-Worry about missing connecting flights or important events
-Noise and disruptions from other passengers
-The sheer duration making the journey feel overwhelming

Part 1: Turbulence

Turbulence is a normal part of flying and pilots are trained to handle it safely. Modern aircraft are built to withstand turbulence, so it’s rarely dangerous. Here are tips to help you get through the bumpy parts of the flight.

#1: Pick Your Seat Before the Flight –

The best place to sit on a plane is near the wings. This area is closest to the plane’s center of lift and gravity, which tends to experience less movement during turbulence. Sitting over the wings can help you feel more stable and reduce the sensation of bumps, making your flight more comfortable if you’re nervous about turbulence.

#2: Lift Your Feet Slightly Off the Floor-

Raising your feet slightly can help reduce pressure on your lower back and legs, providing relief during turbulence.

#3: Focus on Deep Breathing-

Practice deep, slow breaths to help calm your nerves and reduce anxiety caused by turbulence.

#4: Distraction Techniques-

Listen to music, watch a movie, or read to divert your attention from the turbulence.

#5: Stay Hydrated-

Drink water to stay comfortable and avoid dehydration, which can heighten discomfort.

#6: Follow Crew Instructions-

Always adhere to safety instructions and keep your seatbelt fastened when advised.

Part 2: Long Flight

#7: Stretch-

To combat sitting for long periods, you can stretch, walk around the cabin when possible, and stay hydrated.

#8: Accessories to Remember for the Flight-

Comfort:

Bringing a neck pillow, blanket, comfortable clothes, fluffy socks, eye masks, and footrests can make resting more comfortable, turning the long flight into a relaxing experience.

Entertainment:

Don’t forget a good book, your iPhone, iPad, and noise-cancelling headphones. Download podcasts, music, and movies from apps like YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Disney+ . Express VPN allows you to watch your shows anywhere in the world. You can download the app called 1000 offline games. You will now have access to games like Yahtzee at your fingertips.

Snacks:

Bring crackers, fruit, cheese, popcorn, or anything you like to munch on during the long flight.

#9: Breaking up the Flight with Different Activities-

The sheer duration can feel overwhelming. Breaking up the trip with movies, naps, journaling, and snacks makes the time pass quickly.

#10: Stay Patient-

Giving yourself plenty of connection time and checking schedules in advance can reduce stress. While delays or cancellations can be frustrating, they’re often out of your control. Staying patient, keeping essentials in your carry-on, and having a good book or playlist can make waiting easier. Plus, airlines usually do their best to minimize disruptions.
