8 Tips to Prepare You for Visiting the Philippines

8 Tips to Prepare You for Visiting the Philippines

Bucket List # 108- Visit a 3rd-World Country (In June of 2017, I experienced a third world country firsthand)

Background

Many travelers want to visit the Philippines because it is home to the most beautiful islands in the world. The atmosphere, culture, and food might bring some unfamiliarity’s that can catch foreigners off guard. Below are 8 tips to prepare you for visiting the Philippines. Read more to be prepared and know what to expect for your exotic getaway.

20017555_10211514127941532_1529491107392475815_o.jpg

My Experience

In June 2017, I experienced a third-world country firsthand. I traveled to exotic islands throughout the Philippines for three weeks. This was one of the best experiences of my life, as I got to meet new people, learn a new culture and language, and try new food. I will never forget the people who made this trip memorable and the incredible places we went.

Tip #1: Be Aware of the Heat and Wear Light Clothes.

The hot and humid weather is the first thing I felt while arriving in Manila right after we left the airport. Humidity makes the air thicker, essentially making it hard to breathe. Sweat also takes longer to evaporate, which only adds to the heat. Bring light, loose clothing.

screen-shot-2018-01-07-at-8-17-02-pm.png

Tip #2: Know the Season.

The Philippines has two seasons: wet and dry. Know which season your trip falls on. The dry season stretches from November to May, and the rainy season is typically from June to October. The country also experiences typhoons, so stay up to date on the weather reports before your trip. The Philippines has 7,107 islands. The weather and languages are spoken from island to island vary. Bring ponchos to keep yourself from getting wet, especially if you go during the wet season.

Fun Fact: There are an estimated 175 languages spoken. The Current Constitution named Filipino and English as joint official languages.

Screen Shot 2018-01-07 at 8.16.53 PM.png

Tip #3: Ask About Local Public Transportation

Transportation in the Philippines is quite easy because all Filipinos know the English language. I recommend taking Jeepneys or Tricycles to experience how locals get around at economical prices. As I stated before, the Philippines have over 7,000 islands, so know where exactly you want to go and book early bird tickets. We traveled throughout the Islands through Cebu Pacific Air. We also traveled from island to island in Bangkas, the jeepneys of the sea. They are small wooden boats made out of bamboo.

-Book your Flight with Cebu Pacific Air here!

IMG_7188.jpg

IMG_8541Fun Fact: The Philippines has several cultural influences because the country was previously colonized by Spain from 1570 to 1898 and by the United States from 1903 to 1946.

Tip #4: Keep Change.

This will be useful for traveling to small islands where public transportation is cheaper. A tricycle will not have change for a thousand-peso bill. Make sure you have 50PHP on hand. Also, tip your servers 10% to 15%. People in the Philippines generally only earn minimum wage. A little goes a long way. Don’t expect to pay anything with credit card. Many places only accept cash.

Tip #5: Interact with the Locals.

I went to the Philippines with my ex-boyfriend, Luke Tignall. Luke’s grandfather moved to America when he was in his twenties. Family from his mother’s side lives there today. All of his family were happy and hospitable people. They welcomed us with open arms. I recommend getting to know locals and immersing yourself in the Filipino experience.

Tip #6: Try Local Food

Filipinos LOVE their food and normally eat five meals per day. Listed are five traditional and popular meals in the Philippines.

  1. Filipinos cannot go a day without including rice in their meals, EVEN for breakfast! IMG_7023.jpg
  2. They are known for their coconut juice and mangosIMG_0156.jpgIMG_8951.jpgIMG_0326.jpgIMG_8489 (1).jpg
  3. Their FAVORITE food is called Lechon. Lechon is a suckling pig roasted until the skin turns crusty.IMG_8483.jpg
  4. Popular street foods are boiled duck eggs with an embryo called Balut. Screen Shot 2018-01-07 at 8.30.58 PM.png

Tip #7: Learn Tagalog

There are an estimated 175 languages spoken. The Current Constitution Names Filipino or Tagalog and English as joint official languages. Below are nine words to know in Tagalog. ** Ad PO to words, phrases, and sentences when speaking to someone older than you **

  1. Salamat. Thank You.
  2. Kamusta? How are you?
  3. Oo. Yes.
  4. Hindi. No. Not.
  5. Ako. I, Me.
  6. Ikaw. You
  7. Sarap! Delicious
  8. Paumanhin. Sorry, Excuse me.
  9. Paalam. FarewellImage result for Filipino Languages

Tip #8: Learn about Filipino Music, Religion and their Traditions

A. Religion:

The Filipino people mainly practice the Christian religion. Did you know that 80% of the Philippine population is Christian? This is because Spain had an impact on the Filipino people. 11% practice Islam and other beliefs and religions comprise the last 9% of the population.

philippine culture

B. Traditions:

Christianity is an important role in Filipino culture. Christmas and New Year’s are traditions that they celebrate. Relatives join for Noche Buenam, a Spanish term that means Midnight Meal celebrated on December 24th to greet Christmas Day. Families also gather for New Year’s Day and prepare round fruit signifying a prosperous new year.

C. Music:

Filipinos use various materials to create sound. They also sing vocally in groups for festival celebrations. Settlers from Spain introduced instruments such as the ukulele, trumpet, drums, and violin. Most music is contemporary; however, they also write their songs based on real-life events.

5 Best Things to Do in Boracay, Philippines

Bucket List #24: Swim with a School of Fish at the Ocean

5 Best Things to Do in Boracay

Background:

Boracay is a small island in the south of Manila and is known for its white sand beaches. Travelers who visit Boracay would say it is too touristy and there are too many people. However, if you know what to expect, what to do, and where you want to go, then you will enjoy Boracay! We list 5 best things to do in Boracay, Philippines.

My Experience: Shang-Boracay-Aerial.jpg

We stayed at a hotel in Boracay for four nights and enjoyed the beautiful weather and beaches. I was in absolute heaven while we got the most affordable massages, in awe of the fire dancers, and amazed by the breathtaking sunset and sunrise. I will never forget how the white sand felt on my feet, the view of the beautiful mountains while island hopping, and the exhilarating feeling of jet skiing. I can’t even express how incredible the millions of fish swimming alongside us while snorkeling was. Boracay was an adventure that I will remember in the long run. Based on my experience, below are the best things to do that I highly recommend completing while in Boracay.

How do you get to Boracay?

I would recommend taking an airline to Boracay through Cebu Pacific. After landing, take the Catalan route because it is the fastest route. It is only a 10-minute walk or a 3-minute tricycle ride.

Where should you stay?

The best luxury hotels to stay at include Boracay Regency or Shangri-La-Hotel. However, there are also hundreds of locations for a smaller budget. Compare hotels to air bnbs and select the best place to stay at the lowest price.

Quick Tips:

  • Go during the off-peak season, so it is not as crowded. Off-Peak: June-October
  • Do not just stay at the White Beach, where most of the action occurs! Travel throughout the Island.
  • It is not expensive to stay in Boracay, and some hotels will not break your travel budget.
  1. Enjoy Outdoor Adventures! (Jet skiing, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Parasailing, Cliff Diving, ETC.)

    • Snorkeling/Scuba Diving-Not only does Boracay have the most epic views above water, but it is beautiful and rich in color underwater. I recommend feeding the fish to attract them to you. 21557816_10212082797757922_4239540796182066485_n.jpg
    • Parasailing- If you are not skilled at windsurfing or kiteboarding, parasailing is a great way to enjoy the sea.
    • Cliff Diving- I suggest you go cliff diving throughout the Island and sign up for a tour at Ariel’s Point. The 1,600PHP ($36) cost includes a boat ride, unlimited drinks, BBQ lunch, snacks, canoes, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and float rafting. Now, THAT is a steal.
    • Jet Skiing- I enjoyed jet skiing for 1,000PHP. It was an exhilarating adventure, especially when I was the one driving the jet ski.
    • ATV RideExplore the Island in an ATV. Renting is 1,000PHP ($22 per person)
  2. Get a Massage on the Beach.

Boracay has EXTREMELY cheap massage shops. This perfect activity will make you feel calm and relaxed.
    • Do: Be Assertive. Tell your massage therapist if there is too much pressure! I did not tell mine and ended up with thousands of bruises the next day.  (I am over exaggerating)
    • DON’T: Be Rude!!!
  3. Experience the Fire Dancers and Enjoy Tropical Drinks at the Clubs

The Island has a lively nightlife scene you do not want to miss. The country has cheap alcohol in general. Not to mention, all bars have happy hour during their off-peak hours. You need to try Filipino San Miguel Beer. It is stronger than most beers in America! Guilly’s Island was my favorite club, as it had a gung-ho vibe and was open until 4 AM. YES. I LOVE to party, so I was there that late. However, if you are not a party person, I recommend going to any restaurant by the beach and watching the FIRE DANCERS!!! The dancers are a must-see and are so talented!!
  4. Watch the Sunset and Sunrise

The sunset is the most breathtaking view that will mark a special place in your heart, as it has to mine. The view made my hands tingle and my heart feel full. I miss it. Watch the sunset between 5 pm to 6 pm at White Beach. The passing boats add to the spectacular view. Watching the sunrise on the beach is just as beautiful. I recommend waking up early to experience the view. Trust me, it is worth it, even if you are not a morning person.
  5. Taste in the Filipino Food.

    IMG_8489 (1)

    1. The seafood is to die for, and a trip to Boracay is not complete without seafood. There are tons of seafood restaurants to choose from we decided to eat at D’Talipapa. I recommend this place located at Station 2 on the white sand beach. Also, do not forget to have fresh local fruit, as the Philippines are famous for their fresh mangos and coconut juice. My favorite place is Jonah’s Fruit Shake and Snack Bar because they have fruity smoothies and ice cream. I had the mango smoothie. While in Boracay, my ex-boyfriend tried the street food entitled balut. He said it tasted good.

Canyoneering is in Badian Southwest of Cebu. Take a bus from the south terminal in Cebu City. This trip will cost 120 PHP. Buses going south will be heading to Bato. Take the route to Barelli.

Screen-Shot-2017-02-08-at-00.30.43-1024x510.png

How to Book Your Trip?

There are over 20 organizations that run tours through the same route. Whichever organization you pick, you will have an unbelievable experience. I recommend booking through a company entitled Kawasan Canyoneering. They have AMAZING tour guides! I am very thankful for our tour guides because I probably would not have made it without them.

Email: Kawasancanyoneering@gmail.com

Website: www.kawasancanyoneering.com.ph

Address: 6021 Badian, Cebu, Philippines

Quick Tips:

  1.  The tour costs 1,500PHP
  2. Breakfast, safety gear, snacks, tour guides, and a motorbike ride up the mountain are included in the entire rate.DCIM125GOPROGOPR4421.JPG
  3. Bring an EXTRA bottled water
  4. DO NOT look at statistics of how many people died
  5. Take a GoPro, as there are some EPIC views to be captured!
  6. There is a BBQ halfway down the mountain. They have hotdogs, chicken, and sausage. Your tour guide will pay for you to eat. Badian-Canyoneering-at-Kawasan-Falls-Cebu-Philippines-Wheres-Mollie-A-Travel-and-Adventure-Lifestyle-Blog-21.jpg
  7. It is an extra 300PHP to get on the Bamboo Raft taken under the waterfall at the end of the adventure in Kawasan Falls! We decided to go for it and take the raft.

My Experience:

Part A.

In June 2017, I completed Canyoneering in Badian, Cebu, Philippines. Once we arrived, they gave us breakfast, which was included in the rate of the entire canyoneering adventure. Breakfast in the Philippines is not your traditional American eggs and pancakes, but rather it contains rice and meat. After having the traditional meal, we took a thrilling motorbike ride up the mountain. The views going up the mountain were insane.

Screen Shot 2018-01-06 at 7.35.50 PM.pngDCIM125GOPROGOPR4435.JPG

Part B.

Finally, we began hiking down canyoneering. This was one of the scariest experiences of my life because it was raining. Hiking down the mountain was extremely dangerous due to the slippery and muddy rocks. The fact that there was only one rope to hold onto at times and that I had previously broken my tibia and fractured my ankle back in 2013 made it all more difficult to be sturdy during the hike. Not to mention, I am naturally VERY clumsy. Essentially, my anxiety was up the roof. I do not recommend completing canyoneering if you are clumsy. I would never do this ever again.

Part C.

During this trip down the mountain, we saw a man who had broken his leg. We didn’t ask about how it happened, as we didn’t want to freak out and be overwhelmed, not only for him, but for us and completing the trip. BUT I WAS FREAKED OUT!!!! Thankfully, the staff came to help carry him back up the canyon.

Part D.

I am very thankful for our tour guides because I probably would not have made it. The best part of this experience was jumping into the cliffs, as the water was cold and refreshing. I also felt a sense of accomplishment once I made it to the point where we could cliff jump into the clear waters. Jumping gave me a feeling of relief, as well as a chance to breathe and relax throughout the difficult journey.

Did you know whale sharks have 3,000 tiny teeth less than 6mm long? They do not use those teeth to eat. Swimming with them is a life-changing experience; however, you must follow the rules and be responsible. Below are 7 tips for swimming with Whale Sharks in the Philippines.

WHALESHARKS

My Experience:

I swam with Whale Sharks in the Philippines in June of 2017. Swimming with the gentle giants was the ultimate underwater experience. I will never forget watching these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. As I was swimming, I noticed they stretched longer than an entire group of divers. The giant mouths are 3 to 5 feet. I was surprised when our guide told us that the sharks surrounding us were only babies. The breathtaking experience took 30 minutes. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see whale sharks stalling water and food so close.

Tip #2: You Do Not Need to Be a Great Swimmer

Stay close to your boat and stay a minimum of 4m from the shark. Whale sharks are moving between boats, which means you are guaranteed to see them. You do not need to be a fantastic swimmer to experience this.

Tip #3: Bring Your Go Pro

Bring your Go Pro to capture the incredible experience!
